So much to do… There is far more to the Midlands Meander than shopping, eating and roaming about on country roads. Choose your accommodation carefully, and you might not need to get into a car for days. Get up at dawn and watch the cows being milked, or take a walk alongside the dams, where mist steams gently from the cool waters and trout kiss the surface with taunting lips. Back-pack up into the mountains, with a guide who will entrance you with tales of Bushman raids and great battles between Boers, British and Zulu warriors. Watch your children become children again with the freedom to explore and play. Cycle along country lanes, stopping for breath when you tire, and fill your lungs with the sweet smell of freshly cut grass. Paddle a small boat into the middle of a dam, and watch the sun set behind the purple mountains. ‘Play dead’ and watch the birds and small animals come closer. Visit the environmental centres and nature reserves, and delight in the shy beauty of endangered creatures such as the wattled crane and oribi antelope.

If organized activities are your scene, sign up for the challenge of the many sporting events on the calendar throughout the year. Numerous fly-fishing festivals, mountain bike races, the Midmar Mile swimming race, the Midlands Meander Marathon, Springvale Horse Trials, Rand Hunt and many others are highlights for participants and supporters alike. Need an adrenaline rush? Come and watch a polo match - the Midlands is home to some of the world’s oldest polo clubs - and delight in the thunder of hooves as players and horses vie for the ball. Or slow it down and play a round of golf on some of the country’s most picturesque golf courses.

Lob a tennis ball or two about or hold your heart in your mouth and go abseiling down the Howick Falls, known in Zulu as Nonqwaza or the ‘tall one’. Take the family on a hike or horse ride through the valleys and up into the foothills, and marvel at how close you can get to the wildlife. Spend a day at Midmar Dam and tire yourself out windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. Get your city 4 x 4's dirty in the real outdoors, sign up for a canopy tour or learn how to tie a fly. Fast or slow, frenetic or laid back, the choice is yours.
